Easy peasy naturally dyed Easter eggs

 

I have wanted to dye Easter eggs naturally for fifteen years. That is a ridiculously long time to wait to do something. I always thought it would be too hard, too time consuming, or too expensive. Well I am here to tell you that all of the above is not true and I cannot believe it took me this long to try. I will admit that my mildly obsessive love of Martha Stewart is what first sparked this idea and Martha's eggs are, well, perfect. Mine, not so much, but you know what it does not matter. 

 

I am not going to tell you line by line how to do this because you can really play with the how to. I read Dyeing Eggs Naturally from Martha Stewart and Small Measures: Naturally Dyed Eggs from Design Sponge and then I put the computer down and made it up. 

 

Here are my guidelines to naturally dyeing Easter eggs with very little fuss. Grab a medium sized pot. Fill the pot not quite half way with water. Rough chop your vegetable of choice until it fills the pot almost 1/3 to the brim. Then toss in some vinegar. I put in about 1/4 cup. I don't know if that is the 'right' amount, but hey it worked. Boil this mixture for about 1/2 an hour. I chose to boil my eggs seperately because I was having friends over for an impromptu dyeing party using good old PAAS. Then strain the mixture into a bowl and toss the vegis. I chose to put 3 eggs into a glass, scoop in the dye, cover it with plastic wrap and stick it in the fridge over night. Rinse and repeat with other vegis. Wake up in the morning and be completely surprised at what comes out. If you do not feel comfortable mixing it up, then follow the directions in the links above, but I know you can do it. 

 

Rinse the eggs in cold water a couple of times before you touch them. I ended up rubbing off some of the dye when I reached in and grabbed it. Rinsing helps the dye set. 

 

Then grab a cup of coffee and marvel at your brilliance. 

 

Since I am the only one in my little household I only dyed a dozen eggs. 

 

 

I think what amazed me the most are the colors. The purple cabbage gives such a vibrant blue.

 

 

The red onion ends up green and the spinach and kale is this lovely ivory yellow.

 

 

 

I still want to try tumeric, coffee grounds and beets. I also want to try mixing colors to make new colors. Someone needs to come over and help me eat these eggs.  Oh and the Easter bunny has a very important announcement to share-
